PRINCIPLES AND PURPOSE

Believing the Scriptures to be God breathed and that they contain directions for personal and corporate life, United Baptist Church is an organization that is built upon the Word of God.  Our business is introducing individuals to Christ and leading them to discipleship in Him.

Our membership is made up of those who have received Christ as their Savior and Lord.  As a testimony to this salvation, each member has been baptized by immersion in water.

United Baptist Church is not subject to any external ecclesiastical organization, yet we recognize all who are in Christ as our brothers and sisters.  We are affiliated with the Baptist Convention of Maryland/Delaware and the Southern Baptist Convention.  However, the authority of God expressed in the vote of our members determines the actions and issues of our church.

WORSHIP

Sunday morning and evening services provide inspiration and strength for living. Tuesday Evening and Wednesday Morning Prayer and Bible Studies undergird the entire ministry.  Special times of revival or other emphasis are held throughout the year.  Nursery care is provided at all regular services.

MISSIONS

Missions to the whole world has always been a major emphasis.  Jesus taught that the field is the world and we have a world-wide ministry.

Our missionaries are on every continent.  Our Woman's Missionary Union (WMU) encourages our membership to support our missionaries to the extent of our ability.  We are encouraged to pray for them and we welcome them home on their furloughs to hear their personal reports.

SUNDAY SCHOOL

Our Sunday School endeavors to keep the last half of the "Great Commission:" (Matthew 28:20) "teaching them to observe all thing whatsoever I have commanded you."  The systematic study of the Scriptures throughout all of life is the ideal under which we labor.  Thus, we have classes for all ages.

MUSIC MINISTRY

The Music Ministry guides the congregation into a worshipful attitude by singing the great hymns of the faith.  The Sanctuary Choir (Adult) ministers through anthems, preparing hearts to listen responsively to the pastor's message, and to leave motivated to serve.  Special vocal and instrumental ensembles play vital roles in all of our worship services.

Handbells are another way we bring praise to our Lord, and while being able to read music is a plus, it's not required.

No matter what age, ability or interest, "Music Brings Us Together" at United Baptist Church.

AWANA CLUBS

AWANA is an international organization and a church sponsored program for boys and girls ages three years through sixth grade.  Our goal is to reach boys and girls and young men and women with the Gospel of Christ and to train them to serve Him.  Clubs are held Wednesdays Evenings.

NGF (NEXT GENERATION FAMILY)

NGF (Next Generation Family) is for 7th through 12 grade. They meet on Friday evening, and have Bible study called LOG's and MOG's (Ladies of God, and Men of God.) Next, they get together for a time of praise and worship. Following is "The Hot Seat" where issues are discussed concerning teens and the world. Ending the evening is "The Hook" where special activites are planned. Their mission statement: "Our goal is to restore the image of the church by reaching families with the gospel of Christ through passionate and effective youth ministry resulting in making the invisible God visible to the World."

FELLOWSHIP

Fellowship activities and recreation are found in classes, departments, and on a church wide scale at United Baptist.  We not only enjoy serving the Lord, but we also enjoy each other's company as we grow together in love.

FINANCES

Only the hearty, free-will offerings of our people support this work.  No other method of financing is used.  We recommend to our members that they begin their response to God's goodness by bringing to His work a tithe of their income.  No one is pressured.  We have a "unified budget" with three annual Mission offerings promoted by the Woman's Missionary Union each year: International missions (Lottie Moon Christmas Offering), North American missions(Annie Armstong Easter Offering), and State missions (Kathryn Barnes Offering in the Fall).

HISTORY

United Baptist Church was formed on November 19, 1989 when two separate congregations took a final vote to adopt Merger Agreements, a Doctrinal Statement, a Covenant, a Church Constitution, and the name "United Baptist."

To go back in time, the Mount Rainier Baptist Church in the late 1940's allowed some members to meet in the expanding suburban area to begin to form a mission.  After meeting in home and in a fire hall, the "West Lanham Hills Baptist Church" was constituted.

Outgrowing their location, property was purchased on Riverdale Road in Lanham and a new church was erected.  The name was changed to reflect their new surroundings: "Carrollan Woods Baptist Church" (New Carrollton, Lanham, Martin's Woods).

To go back further in time to the late 1880's, a church was formed in Washington, D.C. which became the "Maryland Avenue Baptist Church."  As it grew it too looked to move and also bought property on Riverdale Road.  It also had a name change to "New Carrollton Baptist Church" and in 1977 was incorporated as the "First Baptist Church of Carrollton."

Two churches on the same road, about four blocks from each other.  Both had buildings erected in the early 1960's.  Both were ministering to the same community, following the same Bible, and preaching the same doctrine.  God has now brought us together so that we might be more effective in our witness for Him.

May God bless this ministry of United Baptist Church.  We thank those who have been a part of God's miracle.

Should you ever visit this suburban Washington, D.C. area, we invite you to come worship with us.

May God bless YOU this day !!!
