INTRO: What is Palm Sunday?
Jesus had been staying in Bethany about 1-1/2 miles to the NE of Jerusalem with Mary, Martha, and Lazarus, whom Jesus raised from the dead.

Zechariah 9:9 "Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter ofJerusalem! See, you king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey."
Isaiah 62:11 "The LORD has made a proclamation to the ends of the earth.Say to the Daughter of Zion, "See your Savior comes! See, his reward is with him and his recompense accompanies him.'"

I. JESUS IS THE SON OF DAVID
A. Matthew 1:1 "A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the Son of David, the son of Abraham"
B. Luke 3:31 "The son of Melea the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the Son of David"
C. Matthew 1:20 "But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph Son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit."
D. Romans 1:1-4 "Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God - the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures regarding his Son, who as to his human nature was a descendant of David, and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord."
II. WHAT DOES THE SON OF DAVID MEAN?
A. Jesus to the Pharisees: Matthew 22:42 "What do you think about Christ? Whose son is he?" "The Son of David," they replied."
B. "Son of David" is the title given to:
1. The Messiah the anointed one of God in the Hebrew language
2. The Christ the anointed one of God in the Greek language
C. Look who calls Jesus the "Son of David"
1. Matthew 9:27 "Two blind men followed him, calling out, "Have mercy on us, Son of David!"
2. Matthew 12:23 "All the people were astonished and said, "Could this be the Son of David?"
3. Matthew 15:22 "A Canaanite woman from the vicinity came to him crying out, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering from demon-possession."
4. Two other blind men (reported in Matthew, Mark and Luke)
Matthew 20:30-31 Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was going by, they shouted, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!" The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, "Son of David, have mercy on us!"
5. Palm Sunday crowd
a. Matthew 21:9 "The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Hosanna in the highest!"
(1) Hosanna = save, we pray
(2) Psalm 118:25-26 "O LORD, save us, O LORD, grant success. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD.From the house of the LORD we bless you."
b. Matthew 21:15 "But when the chief priests and the teacher of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple areas, "Hosanna to the Son of David," they were indignant."
c. This crowd was attributing to Jesus the title that only belonged to the Messiah, the Christ.
III. HAVE YOU ASKED THE "SON OF DAVID" FOR MERCY?
A. What were these people asking of the Son of David?
1. Salvation
2. Mercy
B. Have you asked Jesus for salvation?
C. Have you asked Jesus for mercy?
D. Are you shouting Hosanna to Him?
E. The next time Jesus enters Jerusalem it will not be on a donkey, but on the back of a white war stallion.
